Police have arrested a newly elected councillor of Chittagong 's Patiya municipality in a case filed over the death of the brother of another councillor candidate during Sunday's election violence.

Councillor Sarwar Kamal Razib was shown to have been  arrested on Monday afternoon.

Supporters of councillor candidates Razib and Abdul Mannan engaged in clashes in Gabinderkhil polling centre under Ward 8 on Sunday afternoon, leaving Mannan's younger brother Abdul Mabud dead on the spot.

Patiya police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rezaul Karim Majumder said supporters of the councillor candidates -- Sarwar Kamal and Mannan -- engaged in violence in front of the polling centre around 12:30pm.

Mabud was stabbed during the clash and was rushed to Patiya Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physician declared him dead, the OC said.

Police brought the situation under control in the polling area, he added.

Following Mabud’s death, Abdul Mannan filed a case on Sunday night accusing seven identified persons and 10-15 unnamed ones of involvement in causing the tragedy.
