Man arrested for raping mentally challenged girl in Comilla

A man has been arrested for reportedly raping a mentally challenged girl in Nangalkot upazila of Comilla.

Mosharraf Hossain, from Merkot area of the upazila, was arrested on Wednesday.

Locals said that the girl went on a walk near Belghor Gosai Bazar High School on Tuesday afternoon, when Mosharraf took her in front of a washroom of the school and violated her. 

A mason named Habib, who was engaged in construction work of the school, saw the incident.

After the incident came to light on Wednesday, locals detained Mosharraf and handed him over to police.

Nangalkot police station Inspector Rakibul Islam said: “On information, we arrested the accused and the girl was sent to Comilla Medical College Hospital for undergoing medical tests.”

A case will be soon filed in this regard, he added.

Despite clearing a death penalty on last October, the rape horror continues in Bangladesh as several incidents are regularly being reported from different parts of the country.

According to the civil rights organization Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), in 2020, on average, four women were raped daily in Bangladesh amid Covid-19 pandemic.
