The accused often harassed the woman, case documents say
A leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has been accused in a case filed over the attempted rape and assault on a woman in Comilla .
The accused Md Rony, son of Abu Taher of Krishnapur Sardar Bari in Barpara area of Sadar upazila, is the vice-president of Comilla south district unit of Chhatra League.
The woman, wife of an expatriate Bangladeshi, filed the case against Rony at the Comilla Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 on January 31 on charges of attempted rape, assault, and extortion, sources say. However, the matter came to light on Friday, after both parties were served notices on Thursday.
According to case documents, the woman and her child were living with her father as her husband is an expatriate. Rony, a BCL leader from the same area, often used to harass her by sending her inappropriate proposals on different occasions.
In this regard, community arbitration meetings were held in the past, where Rony said that he would no longer bother the woman.
However, upon finding her alone at her house on January 31, he attempted to rape the woman and also beat her up when she screamed for help.
Nazim Uddin, assistant sub-inspector of Chawkbazar outpost of Comilla Kotwali Model police station, said on Friday evening that the court has directed the cell for the prevention of violence against women and children at the district superintendent of police’s office to investigate the case.
“So, we instructed both parties, via separate notices, to appear at the superintendent of police’s office on February 26. The matter will be investigated in detail there.”
BCL leader Rony, however, claimed the allegations against him were false and baseless. “This is a conspiracy against me. Since she has filed a case, I will respond legally”
Comilla south district Chhatra League General Secretary Lokman Hossain Rubel said: "I do not know about the matter yet. However, if he is found guilty in the case, we will take organizational action against him. There is no scope of being backed by the party after committing a crime.”
