Police have arrested two people in connection with the incident
Miscreants have attacked a local journalist in Rangpur for protesting their sexual harassment of his niece.
The incident took place on Friday in Haragach area under Rangpur City Corporation.
Police have arrested two individuals named Yasin and Anis in connection with the attack, Additional Deputy Commissioner Uttam Prasad Pathak of Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP) has confirmed.
The injured journalist, Mizanur Rahman, is Kaunia upazila correspondent of the Daily Jai Jai Din and Asian Television. He is also the general secretary of Kaunia Press Club.
According to police, local thug Parvez Hasan has been sexually harassing Mizan’s niece for a long time.
Mizan informed Parvez’s family about this and asked him not to contact his niece again.
Despite that, Parvez sent several SMS on Mizan’s niece’s mother’s phone on Wednesday and Thursday.
When Mizan complained to Parvez’s family about him still harassing his family, Parvez along with his gang gatecrashed the wedding reception of another niece of Mizan’s on Thursday, vandalizing and destroying the lighting.
Later, on the same day, Parvez and his gang met with Mizan and the two had an altercation.
On Friday, Mizan was returning home from Jumma prayers when Parvez and his gang attacked him and hacked him.
Locals rescued an injured Mizan and took him to a hospital.
Mizan later filed a case regarding the attack with police against 11 people, and 8-10 others who were unnamed.
Local journalists have vehemently condemned the attack on Mizan, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits involved.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Uttam Prasad Pathak, who is also the head of RpMP media wing, said they had taken the incident seriously and were working to arrest all the accused in the case.
