A case has been filed in connection with the death of journalist Borhan Uddin Muzakkir, 25, on Tuesday morning.

Muzakkir was the local correspondent of the online news portal Bartabazar, and Companiganj correspondent for The Daily Bangladesh Samachar and was killed in a shootout between two Awami League factions in Noakhali's Companiganj.

Nurul Husa alias Noab Ali Master filed a case with Companyganj police station at 10:45am. However, none was named as accused in the murder case.

Mir Zahedul Haque, Officer-in-Charge of Companyganj police station said that they began investigating the case.

“As part of the investigation, CCTV footage installed at Chaprashirhat Bazar were collected. We will analyze the footage for the sake of investigation,” said the OC.

Outraged by the murder, journalists who then staged protests in various places of Noakhali, Feni, and Daganbhuiyan districts demanding justice for Muzakkir's death.

The gunfight took place between supporters of Abdul Quader Mirza, brother of Basurhat municipal mayor and Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader and supporters of Mizanur Rahman Badal, the organizing secretary of Companiganj upazila Awami League and former upazila chairman.

Police fired 10-12 rounds of rubber bullets to control the situation. More than 50 leaders and activists were injured in the clash.

A local journalist from Companiganj, who was present at the time of the clash, told Bangla Tribune that the assailants snatched Muzakkir's mobile phone while he was chasing Mirza and Badal's followers.

When he went to ask for his mobile phone back, the assailants randomly shot at him. Journalist Muzakkir sustained bullet injuries and fell on the ground. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning.

Muzakkir was buried in the family graveyard on Sunday night.

Basurhat municipality Mayor Quader Mirza and former chairman Mizanur Rahman are blaming each other for the murder of Muzakkir.

Police and the two Awami League groups are claiming that none of their bullets killed Muzakkir.

OC Mir Zahedul Haque also said that both Abdul Quader Mirza and Mizanur Rahman Badal had called protest meetings claiming that the slain Muzakkir was their follower. As they called the meeting at the same time and same location, section 144 was enforced in Basurhat municipal area from 6am to 6pm on Monday.

Family members

About the delay in filing the case, Nuruddin Mohadish, the elder brother of Muzakkir told Dhaka Tribune on Monday afternoon that his father Nawab Ali Master could not go to the Basurhat municipality of Companiganj on Monday as section 144 was in force. They were also busy with Muzakkir funeral rites.

So, his father filled the case on Tuesday.

Nur Uddin added that the gunfight took place after the Asr prayers on Friday and before the Maghrib prayers.

The CCTV footage of the incident shows who took part in the gunfight and whose bullets killed Muzakkir. He said the footage was in police custody.

He demanded exemplary punishment by identifying Muzakkir’s killers and bringing them under the law.

“We, the family members discouraged him for not doing journalism but it was his passion, that’s why recently he has been involved with journalism and lost his life while covering a news event,” he added.

His elder brother said to this newspaper, Muzakkir was the youngest sibling among their seven brothers and sister.

“From childhood Muzakkir was a very brilliant student. He was the class topper at school and college level. He also got first class in BA in Philosophy under the National University last year, before his death he was a student of Masters Level,” said his elder brother.

Case filed against hundreds

None of the 1,344 accused have been arrested in the two separate cases filed regarding the clashes and shootings in Companiganj.

According to police, Awami League leader Mizanur Rahman Badal filed a case identifying 44 people and 600 unidentified others in Companiganj police station on Saturday.

In the same incident, SI Rafiqul Islam of Companiganj police station filed a case against 700 unidentified persons.

However, not a single accused has been arrested so far.

Noakhali Police Superintendent Md Alamgir Hossain told Bangla Tribune that the situation in Companiganj is not normal yet.

"Police are working day and night to maintain law and order here due to which the investigation of the two cases is being disrupted. The accused will be arrested after investigating the case as soon as possible," he added.
