Update : 26 Feb 2021, 12:11 PM

The prime accused in a case of gang-raping a ninth grader in Tungipara upazila of Gopalganj has surrendered before a court in the district.

Mitul Hossain, 23, surrendered to the Gopalganj Judicial Magistrate Court on Thursday and submitted a bail petition, said Tungipara police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AFM Nasim.

The court, however, rejected the petition and sent him to jail, he added.

Earlier on February 20, the rape survivor's father filed the case against three people with the police station citing Mitul, of Gowhardanga village in the upazila, as the key accused.

Two other accused are -- Rasul Khan, 25, of Tungipara village, and Rajib Sheikh, 22, of Sriramkandi village under the same upazila.

According to the case statement, the girl left for home around 4:30pm on February 14 after finishing her studies at a coaching centre.

On the way, three people intercepted her at Notun Bazar Battala, and with the help of an easybike driver, they took her forcibly blindfolded to an isolated place.

They attempted to make her unconscious with anaesthetic.

As she tried to resist, the accused hit her on the head and she fainted. Then they gang-raped her.

After the incident, they left the unconscious girl in front of her house around 8:30pm.

Family members took her to Tungipara Upazila Health Complex for medical examination. As her condition deteriorated, she was referred to Gopalganj General Hospital.

Later, the girl's family took her to Khulna Medical College and Hospital for better treatment on February 15.

Her uncle said she was unconscious for two days after the incident and they could not find out the cause of her illness.

"Later I came to know about the rape from her. But her physical condition was already worse by then. This is why there has been a delay in filing the case," he added.
