The main accused of the rape case was arrested from Rangamati on Friday

A family in Feni’s Fulgazi upazila is in a difficult situation after they sought justice for the rape of their 16-year-old daughter.

The family complained that they have forcefully been confined to their home for not withdrawing the rape case. The villagers are not allowing them to use anything except the water in a pond. They are not allowed to go to any shop, communicate with anyone, or even take the cattle out of their barn.

The father of the girl from Kutubpur village under Munsirhat union of the upazila said: “On the night of February 19, the village elder Kamrul Master came home to inform us of the decision and also warned us. Instead of providing us justice, the society is doing injustice to us. Now we are living in inhumane conditions.

“No one is talking to us, nor I can go anywhere. My own brother cannot come to our house as he has been threatened too.”

In this context, Kamrul Master said: “A child has been born due to an illicit relationship of the teenager. They have humiliated and disrespected the society. The decision was taken at the village mosque on the basis of the opinion of the society.”

The imam of the mosque, Saleh Ahmad Patwari, said, "On February 19, five minutes before the Esha prayers, a local youth, Israfil Bipul, called me and asked me to join a meeting in front of the mosque. He said that Esha prayers would not be offered on the day until a decision was made about the incident. Many others attended that meeting.”

Israfil said: “The girl's brother asked me for help, but others in the society did not take my word for it. Later, the decision was made by taking everyone’s opinion.”

Munsirhat UP Chairman Nurul Amin said: "I informed the officer-in-charge of the police station after learning about of such inhumane incidents.”

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Fulgazi police station Qutub Uddin said: "I called the local chairman after learning about the matter. I told him that if anything like this has actually happened, we will take strict action."

Earlier on Friday, police arrested Touhidul Islam Shaon, 21, a police constable from Basikpur village in the same upazila, from Rangamati, the main accused in the rape case filed by the girl's mother.

According to the case statement, Shaon lured the girl with promises of marriage and raped her several times. She became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl on February 11 at Fulgazi Upazila Health Complex. With the family’s consent, the newborn was sent for adoption three days after birth.
