Victim Fahima Begum, 23, has been admitted to Habiganj General Hospital

A man has chopped off his wife's hand at the wrist in Habiganj as she refused to sell off her jewellery to facilitate him starting a business.

The incident took place at Piaim village of Madhabpur upazila on Friday morning.

Victim Fahima Begum, 23, has been admitted to Habiganj General Hospital.

The victim's family said Fahima was married to Shamim Miah two years ago and from then on, he would pressurize her for money to do business.

Although Fahima's family gave him money several times, he used to torture her physically.

As she refused to do so, Shamim beat her up. At one point, he cut off Fahima's hand at the wrist with a machete, according to the victim's family.

Hearing her screams, locals rescued and took her to the hospital.

Madhabpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Razzak said no one has filed any complaint so far over the matter.

"Legal action will be taken if any complaint is lodged," he added.
