Sailors on board manage to swim ashore safely
A lighter (shallow-draft boat or barge) carrying 700 tons of coal has sunk in the Pasur River near Mongla Port in Bagerhat.
The vessel, MV Efty Mahmud, drifted away from the jetty due to strong currents and sank after crashing into another lighter on Tuesday afternoon.
All 10 sailors of the capsized ship managed to swim ashore to safety.
Confirming the report, Mainul Islam Mintu, vice-president of Mongla Port Lighter Workers’ Union, said the lighter, carrying 700 tons of coal, was anchored in the morning and was supposed to leave for Jessore’s Noapara area in the afternoon.
It might be recalled that a similar incident occurred on February 27 when MV BB-1148, a lighter, capsized in the Pasur River while carrying around 800 tons of coal after colliding with another vessel.
