Two people who recently returned from the UK have been fined Tk10,000 each and sent to jail for seven days for violating Covid-19 quarantine rulses in Sylhet.
If they fail to pay the fine, they will face seven more days in prison, said Sylhet Metropolitan Police's Additional Deputy Commissioner (media cell) BM Sharafullah Taher on Tuesday.
The duo, Md Abdun Nur, 42, and Alam Hasan Rauf, 36, returned to Bangladesh from London with 138 other passengers on March 22.
They were sent to Hotel Star Pacific in the city's Dargah Gate area for seven-day institutional quarantine as per government instructions.

On Monday, the last quarantine day, they gave their samples for Covid-19 testing. Before the results arrived, they left the hotel around 12:30pm on Tuesday.
They could not be reached over the phone but returned back to the hotel later around 6pm.
On information, Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Md Mezbah Uddin went to the hotel and handed out the punishment.
Abdun and Alam were taken to the jail around 10pm Tuesday.
