The accused were held from Dhaka’s Jurain area on Sunday

A Narayanganj court on Monday granted three-day remand to the four detained leaders of radical Islamist group Hefazat-e-Islam over the April 3 attack on a resort in Narayanganj's Sonargaon upazila.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Ahmed Humayun Kabir passed the order as police produced – Maulana Md Iqbal, 52, Maulana Mohiuddin Khan, 53, Maulana Shahjahan Khan alias Shibli, 43, and Hafez Moazzem Hossain, 52 – before the court and pleaded to place each on a seven-day remand in two cases.

“The four Hefazat leaders were produced before the court in two separate cases filed by the police. After the hearing, the court granted remand for one day in one case and two days in another for each,” Narayanganj court police Inspector Asaduzzaman told Dhaka Tribune.

The four Hefazat top men were arrested from the capital’s Juarain by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members on Sunday afternoon.

“They later were handed over to the Sonargaon police,” said RAB-11 chief Lt Col Khandaker Saiful Alam.

The same day, police arrested 10 more Hefazat leaders and activists in the seven cases filed over violence in Narayanganj.

On the afternoon of April 3, Hefazat bigwig Mamunul Haque was held at the resort with a woman, who he said was his "second wife". He was found at the Royal Resort’s Room No. 501, which he had rented.

The local UNO and senior police officers went to the resort on hearing about the incident. Police said at the time Mamunul was not being detained or arrested and that they were trying to find out what happened.

Hours later, stick-wielding Hefazat supporters launched an attack on the resort. They vandalized it and took Mamunul from the police.

They also blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway, vandalized and torched vehicles in protest of what they said was harassment of the Islamist leader. At the same time, Hefazat activists attacked and vandalized the local Awami League office.
