The deceased came to Bangladesh a few days ago for the Bhanga municipal elections
An expatriate, who returned from Italy, was hacked to death by rivals over electoral violence in the Noupara Bus Stand area in Bhanga municipality of Faridpur on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Masud Mian, 40, son of Harun-or-Rashid. He used to live in Italy with his family and came to Bangladesh a few days ago for the Bhanga municipal elections.
According to sources, supporters of Bhanga municipality former ward councilor Bacchu Member hacked Masud around 9pm while he was drinking at a tea-stall near the bus stand, leaving him critically injured.
There had been a long standing dispute between upazila Awami League Organizing Secretary Rajjak Fakir and Bacchu Member of the area over establishing supremacy, locals said.
Masud died while he was being taken to the hospital.
Syed Lutfor Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bhanga police station, confirmed the matter.
