The young woman’s body was found stuffed inside a drum near the cattle market by the Rajshahi City Bypass on Friday
Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested a police constable in connection to the killing of a woman who was earlier found dead in Rajshahi city.
The PBI identified the woman as 24-year-old Nonika Rani Roy, a native of Thakurgaon, who worked as a nurse in Rajshahi city.
She had just graduated from the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital’s Nursing Institute last year and was working at a private hospital. She lived in the city’s Pathanpara area.
Her body was found stuffed inside a drum near the cattle market by the Rajshahi City Bypass on Friday.
The investigation into her death led to the arrest of 43-year-old Police Constable Nimai Chandra Sarker and three of his accomplices, said Rajshahi PBI Additional Superintendent Abul Kalam Azad.
He said: “Nimai has confessed to the murder. He told police he had been romantically involved with the victim for six to seven years and had been raping her with false promises of marriage.
“Recently, Nonika had been pushing him to marry her. So, Nimai took her to a house he rented in Rajshahi’s Terkhadia area and killed her there. He then stuffed her body inside a drum and dumped it into a pond.”
Previously, Nimai was suspended from the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police unit for his alleged involvement in the making of a pornographic video, according to police sources.
Nimai later joined the Rajshahi (GRP) police station after his suspension ended. His wife is also a police constable in Bogra.
The three others arrested alongside Nimai were Kabir Ahmed, 30, Sumon Ali, 34, and microbus driver Abdur Rahman, 25, all of whom will soon be produced before a court.
