Waliur was expelled from his Awami League party post on April 21
Waliur Rahman, the father of Hefazat-e-Islam Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque's "second wife" Jannat Ara Jharna, has been taken into police custody for interrogation.
A team of Detective Branch (DB) of police received him from the Alfadanga police station in Faridpur at around 11:30am on Sunday. Later they left for their Dhaka office.
Waliur is a freedom fighter and was the president of Ward No 4 of Gopalpur union Awami League in Alfadanga upazila.
Officer-in-Charge of Alfadanga police station Md Wahiduzzaman said: “We had picked up Waliur around 10pm on Friday. The DB team came and took him on Sunday.
“As far as I know, they took him for questioning for the sake of investigating a case. He hasn’t been arrested,” he said.
Mamunul Haque claimed Jharna as his second wife after locals cordoned him off with her at a resort in Narayanganj’s Sonargaon on April 3.
Earlier on April 12, a show-cause notice was issued to Waliur Rahman seeking explanation on why he should not be banished from the party for his family's links with the Hefazat leader, who was arrested last week.
He was expelled from the party on April 21.
According to Md Alimuzzaman, superintendent of Faridpur police (SP), “Waliur has been taken to Dhaka to collect information in a case filed against Mamunul.”
On April 18, Joint Secretary General of Hefazat-e-Islam Mamunul Haque was arrested in connection with a case filed over vandalism with Mohammadpur Police Station in 2020.
Later on April 19, a Dhaka court placed him on a seven-day remand in the vandalism case.
Earlier Mamunul, who has been in the limelight due to some recent controversies, was held with a woman he claimed to be his second wife from a resort in Sonargaon on April 3.
Later, Hefazat leaders claimed that Mamunul went to the resort with his “second wife” where locals confined and harassed him before calling in the police.
