All the members of the convening committee are related or close to Junayed Babunagari

The Qawmi madrasa-based Islamist group Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh has announced a five-member convening committee, within two hours of the dissolution of its central committee early on Monday.

Chief adviser of the convening committee is Muhibullah Babunagri, while Ameer Junayed Babunagari and Secretary General Nurul Islam are there too. Two other members of the new committee are Salauddin Nanupuri and Prof Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury.

Dhaka Tribune found that all the members of the new committee are related or close to its chief Junayed Babunagari.

Muhibullah Babunagari, one of the aged leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam, is the uncle of Junayed Babunagari. He is also the director of Babunagar madrasa at Fatikchhari in Chittagong.

Secretary General Nurul Islam Jihadi is one of the trusted allies of Babunagari. Nurul and Babunagari are cousins.

Nurul is the director of Jamia Mahjanul Ulum Madrasa at Khilgaon in Dhaka and has also served as the secretary general of Hefazet-e-Islam when Babunagari was elected president of the organization following the death of its president Ahmad Shafi.

Salauddin Nanupuri is the son of Shah Jamiruddin Nanupuri from Fatikhchari, Chittagong. His father is the founder of Nanupur madrasa in Chittagong.

Salauddin Nanupuri’s younger brother is married to Babunagari’s daughter.

Prof Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury, also known as Pir of Dewana, is the principal of Dewana madrasa in Kapasia, Gazipur.

After completing his studies, he obtained the khilafat of Shah Abdalur Hoque Pir and then continued his career with Dewana madrasa of Gazipur.

Earlier, Babungari announced the dissolution of the Qawmi madrasa-based organization's central committee in face of the arrests of its leaders, activists and supporters in different places of the country, including Dhaka, every day.

Nineteen top Hefazat leaders have been arrested so far over the protests and violence orchestrated by the organization's supporters and activists across the country against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bangladesh visit last month.

No fewer than 77 cases have been filed against Hefazat leaders and activists over recent clashes and vandalism. More than 69,000 people have been charged with involvement in the incidents.

Hefazat Ameer Junayed Babunagari dissolved the former committee amid the crackdown and announced the new convening committee.

Meanwhile, two cases were filed against Junayed Babungari in connection with his alleged involvement in the violence in Chittagong's Hathazari.
