Jessore records Bangladesh’s highest temperature in 7 years

The country on Sunday recorded the highest temperature -- 41.2 degree Celsius in Jessore -- in the last seven years.

This came amid a heatwave that is sweeping across Bangladesh over the past few days.

According to a Met Office bulletin released on Monday, a severe heatwave is sweeping over the regions of Rajshahi, Jessore, Kushtia and Khulna.

Besides, it said, a mild to moderate heatwave is also sweeping over Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chittagong, Rangpur, Sylhet and Barisal divisions and the remaining part of Rajshahi and Khulna divisions and it may continue.

The Met Office also forecasted that day temperature may rise slightly and night temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country.

Weather will likely remain dry with a temporary partly cloudy sky over the country, it said, adding: "Rain/thundershower is likely at the beginning period and day temperature may fall by 1-4 degrees Celsius over the country.”    

While Jessore saw the maximum temperature, the lowest -- 21.8 degrees Celcius -- was recorded in Sylhet’s Srimangal.

Meanwhile, Dhaka also experienced its hottest day in eight years, with the temperature rising to 39.5 degrees Celsius.

Media reports said Chuadanga had recorded the last highest temperature -- 42 degrees Celsius -- in 2014.

In the past two decades, the country had recorded the highest temperature -- 42.2 degrees Celsius -- in Jessore.

A temperature between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius is considered a mild heatwave, 38 to 40 degrees Celsius a moderate heatwave, and above 40 degrees Celsius is an extreme heatwave.
