Police deny allegations of custodial torture
Nazmus Hasib, a cameraperson of the private TV channel ATN Bangla, has reportedly been tortured in police custody in Kushtia.
The incident occurred at the district’s Kumarkhali police station on Wednesday.
According to sources, three persons, including a policeman, were injured when clashes broke out between two Awami League groups at Shalghar Madhua village of the upazila on Wednesday morning.
Police arrested nine people, including Hasib, following a case that was filed over the incident.
Hasib's bail plea was granted on Thursday after the detainees were produced before the court.
Injured Hasib is currently undergoing treatment at Kumarkhali Upazila Health Complex.
When contacted, Kumarkhali police station Inspector (Investigation) Rakib Hasan said: “He [Hasib] was arrested from the spot of the incident in a joint operation. Allegations of his being tortured in police custody are not correct.”
Local journalists on Thursday organised a rally and formed a human chain protesting the incident. They demanded exemplary punishment of those involved.
