Separate isolation cells for new inmates at Khulna jail

So far, 97 people have died of Covid in Khulna division, according to the local health department office

Khulna District Jail authorities have set up 30 isolation cells for coronavirus-infected inmates in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Two physicians, one nurse and one pharmacist have been deputed to provide healthcare services to the infected inmates.

Sources at the jail said that new inmates will be initially lodged in Bhairab ward for 14 days. Any inmate exhibiting any Covid-19 symptom during this isolation period will be moved to a separate ward and tested for coronavirus. If found positive, the inmate will be shifted to Khulna Corona Dedicated Hospital.

Jail Superintendent Omar Faruk said: “We have set up 30 cells for housing new inmates with Covid symptoms inside the jail. If found positive, we will shift them to Khulna Corona Dedicated Hospital. Fortunately, we have not yet found any Covid-19 inmate in the recent past."

According to the local health department office, 29 people have died from Covid-related complications in the past one month in Khulna. Besides, one died in Magura, 16 in Kushtia, 12 in Jessore, 10 each in Jhenaidah and Satkhira, seven in Bagerhat, five in Chuadanga, four in Narail and three in Meherpur districts. So far, 97 people have died of Covid in Khulna division.

During this period, some 4,372 people have been found infected with the deadly virus in Khulna division.
