Police say they attacked each other with knives

A Chinese national has been murdered reportedly by his compatriot over a trifle in Sylhet city’s Pathantula area.

The victim is Wei Wentao, 48, an employee of the Kumargaon power plant.

Police have detained the alleged murderer, Xue Chao, from the spot.

Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Abu Farhad said Wei had been living in a rented house along with 11 other fellow citizens, who were his colleagues too, in the area.

“Wei and Xeu Chao physically clashed with each other following a heated altercation over washing hands after breakfast (around 8am on Tuesday),” the OC said.

At one stage, they attacked one another with knives. Wei was critically injured during the brawl, while Xue received minor wounds.

The other Chinese nationals living in the flat rushed Wei to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at around 11am, OC Farhad said.

The victim’s body was kept at the hospital’s mortuary. The Chinese embassy in Bangladesh was informed about the incident.

The next course of action, regarding sending Wei’s remains home will be taken based on the decision of the embassy.

Xue was admitted to the hospital under police custody.
