An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) was suspended after an initial investigation found him guilty of raping a woman while she was under institutional quarantine for Covid-19 in Sadar upazila of Khulna.
The accused ASI Moklesur Rahman was on duty at the Primary Teachers Training Institute (PTI) quarantine centre in Khulna Sadar when the incident of rape occurred.
KMP Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Md Jahangir Alam confirmed the matter in a press release on Monday evening.
Police arrested Moklesur earlier at noon soon after the victim had filed a case with Sadar police station bringing charges of rape against him.
According to the case statement, on May 14, the accused was on duty at the PTI quarantine centre from 1am to 8am.
During these hours, Moklesur entered the woman's room and raped her. The next night, he again tried to rape the woman but failed as she screamed for help.
Police found the incident to be true in the initial investigation.
Moklesur was sent to jail after being produced before the court.
The woman is now undergoing treatment at the One-Stop Crisis Centre of Khulna Medical College Hospital, the official added.
