35 Chinese nationals test Covid-19 positive at Payra thermal power plant

22 local workers tested positive for the disease as well

Thirty-five Chinese nationals working at Payra thermal power station have tested positive for Covid-19, Patuakhali civil surgeon’s office said on Tuesday.

They are among 57 workers of the power station who tested Covid-19 positive in the last 24 hours. The remaining 22 are Bangladeshis.

The power station is located in Patuakhali’s Kalapara upazila.

Upazila Health Officer Dr Chinmoy Hawlader said the authorities of Payra power station examined one thousand people working there, under their own management.

Those who tested positive — 35 Chinese and 22 Bangladeshi workers — have been kept in isolation centres arranged by the station authorities, he said.

According to the district civil surgeon's office, no Covid-19 positive patient was identified elsewhere in Patuakhali district but Kalapara in the last 24 hours.

Kalapara Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abu Hasnat Mohammad Shahidul Haque said 400-450 Chinese people are working at Payra thermal power station.

Earlier, 15 Chinese workers of the power plant had tested positive for the disease.
