Due to the rising water level of rivers, water entering through the drains flooded many roads during the high tide, which again abated during the low tide.
However, no casualties have been reported in Barisal district so far.
Barisal Deputy Commissioner Jasim Uddin Haider has instructed Upazila Nirbahi Officers to inspect the damage caused by Cyclone Yaas in Barisal district.
On Wednesday afternoon, he informed reporters about the extent of damage caused by Cyclone Yaas, after observing the disaster management activities of the district in his office room.
He said 316 shelters and 755 temporary shelters had been set up in 10 upazilas of Barisal district. Besides, the shelters were being provided with round-the-clock security and adequate supplies of dry food. Adequate water purification tablets have been kept ready.
Also, control rooms had been set up in each upazila under the supervision of the upazila administration. Medical teams and fire services had been kept ready in the upazilas, he added.
Different upazilas of the district
In Barisal Sadar upazila 1,000 families have been stranded in Charbaria, Shyastabad, Chandramohan and Charmonai Unions.
In Wazirpur upazila of Barisal district, crops have been damaged due to rising tides in five unions. Tidal water has risen in three wards of the municipality.
The lower region of Mehendiganj upazila has been flooded. However, the water is decreasing with the ebb.
The cyclone caused damage to various dams, roads and bridges and culverts in Joynagar, Darichar-Khajuria and Biddanandapur union in Mehendiganj. Two chains of the platoon of Kaliganj Ghat in Ulania have been broken.
Water entered Bakerganj upazila’s Nalua union after a dam was damaged. Tidal waters have entered other unions as well. The dam has already been repaired at the initiative of the local administration.
Low-lying areas of Muladi, Babuganj and Hijla upazilas of the district were inundated by the tide. The water has started to go down at low tide.
In Banaripara upazila, Gournadi upazila and Agailjhara upazila, the tidal water in rivers and canals has increased more than normal. No damage has so far been reported.
