Her father is nowhere to be found since her birth

An eight-day-old girl child’s body has been found from a pond in Tala upazila, Satkhira.

Suspecting foul play, police have arrested the infant’s mother, 35-year-old Shaymoli Ghosh, for question, Tala police station OC Mehedi Rasel told Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday.

The child’s body was found floating in the pond on Tuesday, in Raypur village under the upazila’s Khalilnagar union.

Her father, Manik Ghosh, has allegedly been missing since her birth.

According to locals, the child was born to the couple, their fourth daughter, on the night of May 25.

Manik left the house on the next day without informing anyone, and since then his whereabouts has been unknown, they said.

Quoting Shyamoli, locals also said that she went to sleep with her baby daughter on May 31 night, and sometime in the night the newborn went missing.

Next morning, hearing the news that the baby had gone missing, locals started looking for her. They also informed the local authorities.

Then at 10:30pm on June 1, people spotted the child’s body floating in the pond beside the couple’s house and informed police. Police then recovered the body.

Sources close to Shyamoli’s family said the couple already had three daughters and maybe that is why the fourth daughter was killed.

Locals commented that Manik was unhappy about the birth of another daughter, and that is why he left.

Confirming the incident, Tala Union Parishad Member Bikash Mondol expressed grief in the incident and said they had looked for the child everywhere before finally finding her body in the pond.
