Lightning strikes are common during monsoon in Bangladesh

At least 23 people were killed in lightning strikes during storms or thundershowers in 10 districts around the country on Sunday.

Lightning strikes are common during the monsoon in Bangladesh. They generally kill several hundred people – mostly farmers working under the open sky – every year.

There is a correlation between thunderbolts and temperature, according to a study published in 2017.

It said that around 5,000-6,000 meters above the level of Bangladesh’s atmosphere, the temperature remains humid and warm from late April till the third week of May every year, leading to an increase in such incidents.

In Chittagong, four people including two women were killed and two others injured after they were struck by thunderbolts in Fatikchhari, Boalkhali and Mirsarai upazilas in the morning.

The two women who died at Fatikchhari’s Kanchannagar union were identified as Vanumati Shil, 40, and Lucky Rani Das, 38.

The injured, identified as Malti Das, 50, and Shobha Rani Dey, 45, were admitted to a local hospital.

All four lived in the same area and became victims of lightning strikes around 8am Sunday when they were working in a field amid rain, said police and locals.
