Three of a family held for murder of mentally-challenged woman

A man, his wife and mother have been arrested for torturing an elderly mentally-challenged woman to death in Sonatala upazila of Bogra.

The arrestees are Shahidul Islam, 45, his wife Shima Akter, 35, and mother Amena Begum, 65—all hailing from Madhyapara Mohicharan village of the upazila.

According to police, the trio beat up 65-year-old Monwara Begum aka Mono Pagli with wooden sticks as she complained against Shahidul’s son Mottalib of pelting brick chips at her on Sunday afternoon. 

The villagers rescued her and gave primary treatment. But she died around 6am on Monday, with bruises on her arms and legs, confirms Sonatala police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rezaul Karim.

After her death, the villagers confined the family to their house and called the police.

“They were later shown arrested in a case filed against them,” the police officer said.

The body was sent to the morgue of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College for an autopsy.
