This is the first deathless day for the Khulna district since the beginning of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

A total of 917 more people have tested positive for Covid-19 in all 10 districts of the Khulna division in the last 24 hours on Thursday, taking the total number of infected patients to 48,795.

With 20 more fatalities from the disease were reported afresh on the day, the death toll reached 916, including the highest 228 in Khulna, followed by 173 in Kushtia, 119 in Jashore,81 in Chuadanga, 78 in Jhenaidah, 73 in Bagerhat, 65 in Satkhira, 38  in Meherpur, 36 in Narail and 25 in Magura, said Dr Rasheda Sultana, divisional director of Health.

However, this is the first deathless day for Khulna district since the beginning of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

Of the new fatalities, seven are from Kushtia, five in Jessore, three in Jhenaidah, two each in Chuadanga and Satkhira, one in Meherpur in the division.

The new daily infection figure also shows an almost increase compared to the previous day’s figure of 903, said the health department sources.

“Among the infected people, 35,676 have, so far, been cured of the lethal virus with 451 new recoveries found this morning,” said Dr Rasheda, adding that a total of 6,218 infected patients are now undergoing treatment at different designated hospitals here.

Besides, all the positive cases for Covid-19 have, so far, been brought under necessary treatment while 49,067were kept in isolation units of different hospitals for institutional supervision. Of them, 36,378 have been released so far.

On the other hand, 224 more people have been sent to home and institutional quarantine afresh while 154 others were released from isolation during the last 24 hour.

Meanwhile, in the wake of the surge in cases and deaths, the Khulna district administration imposed stricter restrictions on public movement and gathering in the city and across the district for a week from Tuesday.

However, the first two days of the lockdown saw a random breach of the restrictions on public movement and gathering.

Shops were seen open in many city areas, with some streets experiencing a notable rush of traffic.

Most of the public transports were carrying passengers at full capacity.

People were seen gossiping at tea stalls, having food at eateries, and smoking cigarettes outside. Most of them were not wearing any masks.

Many hawkers and street vendors were also out on the streets to sell daily essentials among various other products.

Police had set up bamboo barricades at various important points of Khulna city but were finding it hard to control public movement. They were seen patrolling the roads and sentencing different terms to people for flouting the lockdown rules and not wearing masks.
