He was accused in a dozen cases filed over various charges including murder
An alleged criminal was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members in the Sahittika Palli area under Ward No 6 of Cox’s Bazar town early on Saturday.
The elite force identified the deceased as Ashraf Ali alias Ashu Ali, 27, who was accused in at least 12 cases filed over various charges, including murder, mugging and owning illegal weapons.
RAB 15 Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commander Tanvir Hasan said a team of the force had conducted a raid in the area after receiving a tip-off.
He said: “Seeing the RAB team, members of Ashu Ali Bahini (gang) started shooting. But they fled the scene after the RAB team returned fire.”

The RAB members searched the area afterwards and found Ashraf, who had been shot, and took him to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. The on-duty doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.
Some local and foreign arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot as well, added the RAB official.
Ashraf’s body was kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Two alleged criminals on law enforcers’ wanted list were also killed in separate “gunfights” in Teknaf and Ukhiya on Friday and Thursday, respectively.
