29 mortar shells recovered in Bandarban

BGB official says they will continue operations to stop terrorist activities in the hills

Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh  (BGB) have recovered 29 highly explosive mortar shells after conducting a special operation at Thanchi upazila in Bandarban. 

Under the supervision of 38 Bolipara Battalion, the operation was led by Lt Col Khandaker Muhammad Sharif-ul-Alam, commander of Galenga area Battalion Zone,  who recovered the mortar shells buried in the ground.

No one was arrested during the drive.

Commander Khandaker said there were terrorist activities in the hills till now. The seizure of the powerful explosives was possible due to special initiatives of the law enforcement agencies.

The locals were in grave danger because of these mortal shells. "Our drives will continue and the intelligence activities will be increased to curb terrorist activities in the hills," he said.

On April 28, an operational team of the Bangladesh Army recovered huge quantities of arms, ammunition, local weapons and other materials during a raid at a terrorist den in Noapatang under Rowangchhari upazila of the district.

On May 11, the army members stationed at Ruma in Bandarban recovered two Russian submachine guns (SMGs), ammunition and some narcotics after carrying out a raid at a hideout of armed miscreants.

Sensing their presence, the miscreants opened fire, causing the army personnel to retaliate with gunshots. But at one stage, the miscreants fled the scene, leading to the recovery of the arms, ammunition and drug items, according to the  Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
