Locals express resentment as mayor himself disobeys rules
Noakhali's Basurhat Municipality Mayor Abdul Quader Mirza has organized a meeting with several hundred followers defying Covid-19 restrictions.
The tea party was held at the Basurhat Municipality auditorium from 3pm to 4pm on Monday, according to media reports.
Around 250 people joined the discussion, organized ahead of his upcoming visit to the US. Quader Mirza is the younger brother of minister and ruling party General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
Quader Mirza also posted four photos of the event on Facebook on Monday afternoon.
Many locals have expressed their displeasure saying that the mayor, a public representative, organized the meeting at a time when he was supposed to do the opposite in line with the government order.
The government is enforcing a countrywide strict lockdown for 14 days from July 25 to curb the spread of coronavirus infection.
According to people close to Quader Mirza, he is scheduled to fly to the US from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 4am on Wednesday for a health check-up.
