Zafarullah wants oxygen plants in all districts

He suggests that workers be vaccinated before reopening factories

Update : 01 Aug 2021, 08:07 PM

Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury has said that people will not die due to lack of oxygen if it is made available across the country.

“Oxygen production plants should be set up in all the 64 districts to battle oxygen crises during the pandemic,” he said during a media briefing at Gonoshasthaya Kendra in Dhanmondi on Sunday.

“German technology is the best in producing oxygen. It costs only Tk6 crore to produce 50 tons of oxygen per month. There are plenty of industries who can do this,” he said.

Dr Zafarullah alleged that the people were dying and the education system was on the verge of destruction due to the government’s mistakes. The bureaucrats and the businesspersons were running the country using the prime minister.

On the government’s decision to resume operations of export-oriented factories including the RMG units, Dr Zafarullah said: “There are some rules to follow to reopen the factories. The workers must be vaccinated and it’s not that hard. The factory  owners have some responsibilities too.”

In his speech, Nagorik Oikkya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna criticized the re-opening of the export-oriented factories. He also slammed the government for its lack of knowledge on how many doses of vaccine the country has at present.

On the other hand, the Left Democratic Alliance -- a platform of eight leftist political parties -- carried out a procession in front of the National Press Club on Sunday protesting against the decision to reopen the factories.

Leaders of the alliance criticised the government for announcing the decision amid the strict lockdown and not arranging transportation for the workers.
