Two people have been arrested in the incident
The family members of former in-laws of a woman have tried to kill her by setting her on fire in Raipura upazila in Narsingdi.
They promised to take the woman named Parveen Akhter, 27, to get vaccinated and lured her to an empty space and tortured her.
They then poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.
The incident took place in Lochonpur area of Uttarbakharnagar Union in Raipura upazila on Saturday.
The victim is currently undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka with 75-80% burns.
On Sunday, the victim's younger brother filed a case under the Women and Child Repression Prevention Act.
Police arrested ex-husband Zakir Hossain’s brother Ali Hossain, 32, and nephew Md Shahriar, 18, from Lochonpur area on Sunday afternoon.
Quoting Parveen Akhter, the investigation officer of the case, Raipura police Sub-Inspector Md Kamal Hossain told Dhaka Tribune that she had gotten married to Zakir Hossain 10-12 years ago and the couple have a 10-year-old daughter.
She had recurring conflicts with Zakir and his family leading to the in-laws torturing her freely since Zakir was living abroad.
Parveen Akhter got divorced from Zakir Hossain eight months ago and started living with her parents.
On Saturday, Rahima Khatun, wife of one of her brothers-in-law, called Parveen Akhter and said they would take her to get vaccinated that day.
Rahima Khatun and Zakir’s brother Ali Hossain then took Parveen to an empty place in Lochonpur on a CNG, and tied up her hands before setting her on fire.
Locals rescued her after hearing screams and took her to the upazila health complex. She was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as her condition deteriorated.
Meanwhile, Parveen Akhter's brother Akram alleged that her in-laws had tortured her many times in the past.
“Last year, Ali Hossain stabbed my sister in the leg due to a trivial issue following which Parveen filed a case against him.
“This enraged her in-laws and they used to torture her often,” added Akram.
He alleged that they had planned to kill Parveen as she refused to withdraw the case.
