Mild tremor in Chittagong as earthquake jolts Myanmar

A mild tremor has been felt in Chittagong region of Bangladesh after an earthquake struck in the Bay of Bengal off Myanmar.

The quake, which had a magnitude of 4.4, struck at 9:38pm on Monday and no casualties or damage has been reported yet, according to media reports.

The epicenter of the quake was 426km southeast of Dhaka and 122km southeast of Cox's Bazar, said Mizanur Rahman, an official of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department's Earthquake Observation Centre.

In May and June, a series of minor earthquakes jolted Bangladesh's Sylhet, causing concern among locals.

Experts believe the vibrations are a precursor to a huge quake, and they are calling for immediate earthquake exercises in the region to prepare for a probable calamity.
