Police detained the ward master following the incident
A ward master of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital in Faridpur has assaulted a senior staff nurse for protesting against extortion at the hospital’s Covid-19 vaccination centre.
Police detained the ward master, Atiar Rahman, on Wednesday after receiving a written complaint from Senior Staff Nurse Afsana Akhter Shanta.
According to Afsana, Atiar used to extort a portion of remuneration meant for the volunteers working at the hospital’s vaccination centre.
Some of the volunteers went to Afsana to complain about Atiar’s coercion.
On Tuesday, Afsana confronted Atiar and told him to stop taking money from the volunteers. Atiar became agitated and punched Afsana.
Afsana also claimed that she had informed the hospital director right away, but to no avail.
Later she lodged a written complaint with Kotwali police station.
Meanwhile, hospital Director Dr Saifur Rahman said: “I know about the incident. However, Staff Nurse Afsana did not inform me about this. She reported the incident directly to the police without informing us.”
Kotwali police station Officer in-Charge MA Jalil said: “A police officer visited the scene after the incident. Ward Master Atiar has been detained after receiving the written complaint.”
