The man has been on the run since the allegations surfaced
The teacher of a girls school in Rangpur’s Pirganj upazila has been suspended after several students brought complaints of sexual harassment against him.
The managing committee of Laldighi Girls Academy removed Anup Kumar Mohanta, a teacher of the religious studies department, amid calls and protests from locals for his removal and arrest.
However, the man has been on the run since the allegations surfaced.
According to committee sources and several students and their parents, Arup had been sexually harassing female students who went to him for private tuitions for a while now.
The matter came to light after one of those students formally filed a written complaint against.
Apart from that written complaint, school management committee chief Rabiul Islam said the parents of at least 12 other students, who were sexually harassed by Anup since he joined in 2015, had also lodged verbal complaints.
He added that Arup himself admitted to sexually harassing the students in a written statement during a meeting with the committee.
Arup has also been accused of establishing sexual relations with his students, promising them marriage. The complaints started surfacing after he got married around four months ago, said Rabiul.
Meanwhile, students and guardians have been demonstrating for the last three days, demanding his immediate arrest and permanent removal.
Pirganj Upazila Secondary Education officer Abdul Momin Mandal said legal action will be taken against Anup if the allegations were found to be true.
Meanwhile, the school’s Headmaster Rashedunnabi Talukdar said they have show-caused the management committee asking why Anup should not be fired.
Anup was unavailable for comments.
