Police have arrested a Union Parishad (UP) member in Singra upazila of Natore for brutally torturing a rickshaw van puller on suspicion of having an affair with his wife.
The incident took place at Kharsati Bazar in Tajpur Union of Singra Upazila on Monday.
The UP member was identified as Fazar Ali, a member of ward No 2 of Tajpur Union Parishad.
Police say the rickshaw van driver, Mizu Ahmed, 35, went to the shop of Fazar Ali’s wife Rekha on Monday. Rekha and Mizu are cousins.
At that time, Fazar Ali entered the shop and started beating Mizu. At one point, Mizu was tied to a pole and beaten up mercilessly with an iron rod.
Hearing his screams, locals rushed to the spot and informed the police.

Police rescued Mizu in a critical condition and admitted him to Singra Upazila Health Complex.
Mizu’s mother Marzina Begum lodged a case with Singra police station against four.
Investigating Officer of the case SI Kishore Kumar Paul said: “Fazar was arrested on Monday night in connection with the incident and sent to Natore Jail on Tuesday afternoon. The other accused are still on the run.”
Monwara Begum, a UP member from the reserved seat, said: "My sister Rekha was married to Fazar Ali 16-17 years ago. Since then, he has been torturing her in various ways.”
Tajpur UP Chairman Minhaj Uddin said: "As soon as I got the news, I went to the spot. The rickshaw van puller was brutally tortured. If it was a small issue, we could resolve it locally. However, he was unjustly beaten.”
