Mentally challenged girl raped in Sylhet, one held

A man has been arrested for allegedly raping a 15-year-old mentally challenged girl in Companiganj upazila of Sylhet.

Rubel Bishwas, 21, was arrested by police and sent to jail via court on Wednesday after the girl’s mother filed a case on Tuesday night, said Companiganj police station OC KM Nazrul on Wednesday.

According to locals, the girl was walking around the Upazila Parishad office area around 8:30pm on Monday, when Rubel took her to a nearby school building and raped her.

Later, Rubel was caught by locals but his family members managed to leave the scene with him.

Meanwhile, the girl was sent to the Upazila Health Complex for treatment. No guardian of the girl was found at the time.

Her family said she had been missing since Friday. They were able to trace her on Tuesday from a post on Facebook.
