A pedestrian who fell into a ditch overflowing with rainwater following a heavy downpour in Chittagong city on Wednesday continues to remain missing after 24 hours of his disappearance.

The missing person was identified as Saleh Ahmed, 50, a vegetable trader from the Chawkbazar area of the port city.

As of Thursday afternoon, two diver units of the Agrabad Fire Service and Civil Defence were conducting the rescue operation in the city’s Muradpur area to recover the missing person’s body.

Enamul Haque, station manager of Agrabad fire station said: “We had to conclude Wednesday’s rescue operation after sundown for lack of daylight. The operation was resumed Thursday morning with two driver units working at the scene.”

The firefighters are conducting search operations at all possible points in the city, he added.

While speaking to Saleh’s son Sadeequllah Mahim at the scene, this correspondent learned that his father left home on Wednesday morning to visit Maizbhandar.

“After we heard about dad at around 12 noon, we quickly went to Muradpur and started helping with the rescue operation. We are growing increasingly worried as it’s been over 24 hours and there’s still no sign of him,” he said.

He added: “The authorities concerned shouldn’t have been so callous. They should’ve put up warning signs before such a large open ditch on the side of the road. I don’t want anyone to lose their father as I have.”

Meanwhile, after the CCTV footage of Saleh Ahmed falling into the ditch in the city’s Muradpur area at around 11am on Wednesday spread on social media, it led the public to question the decision to keep such a big ditch wide open and unprotected in the middle of the busy city.
