It’s believed to be the largest dolphin found dead on the beach lately

Update : 02 Sep 2021, 11:32 PM

Activists have asked the government to take immediate measures as another large dolphin was found dead at Kuakata sea beach in Patuakhali, the fourth one in the last one year.

Md Jewel, a member of the Kuakata Dolphin Protection Committee, spotted the 12-foot dolphin lying on the beach near the forest camp on Thursday morning.

The dolphin had injury marks on the body, he said, adding that it might have died several days ago.

Later it was buried by officials of the fisheries department.

“It is the largest dolphin found dead at Kuakata in the last one year,” said Ruman Imtiaz Tushar, team leader of the organization.

Kalapara Upazila Fisheries Officer Apu Saha could not immediately confirm how it had died.

He said that the matter had been discussed with the higher authorities several times. “In most cases, the dolphins die after being trapped in fishing nets,” he added.

Earlier, two dead dolphins were found at Kuakata beach in May and another in January, and several others in Halda River in Chittagong and Bhola recently.

Two types of dolphins are found in Bangladesh – Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) and Gangetic dolphin (Platanista gangetica).
