Awami League lawmaker Md Hasibur Rahman Swapon has passed away while undergoing treatment.
The 67-year-old Sirajganj 6 MP breathed his last early morning on Thursday at a hospital in Turkey, his personal aide Ashikur Rahman Dinar told Bangla Tribune.
Swapon was infected with coronavirus and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka for several days. He was recently taken to Turkey for advanced treatment.
President Mohammad Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep grief over the death of the MP and extended their deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury informed the parliament about the death of MP Swapon at the beginning of the session on Thursday morning. Later, the speaker offered condolences.
Swapon was a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges in the 11th National Assembly.
He was born on June 16, 1954 in the village of Dwariyapur under Shahjadpur upazila of Sirajganj. He has represented Sirajganj voters in Parliament three times.
In the 7th parliamentary elections of 1996, Swapon was elected as a MP from the then Sirajganj 6 constituency as a BNP candidate.
After leaving the BNP and joining the Awami League, Swapon lost his seat in 1998. He was then given the charge of Deputy Minister of Industries in the then Awami League government.
Later, he was elected as a MP from Sirajganj 6 constituency on the nomination of Awami League in the 10th parliamentary elections of 2014 and the 11th parliamentary elections of 2018.
