The overall flood situation in Faridpur and Rajbari Faridpur further deteriorated as the water level in Padma River continued to swell, flooding fresh areas on Saturday.
In Faridpur, around 18,600 families have become stranded after a total of 10 unions were freshly inundated due to the rising water levels of the Padma River.
The river swelled by 5cm and was flowing 74cm above the danger mark at Daulatdia ghat point in the last 24 hours until Saturday, said the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).
Meanwhile, floods have affected 10 upazilas in the district, and in all these areas, crop fields, roads and houses in low lying areas have been submerged.
Besides, 150 villages in Madhukhali, Alfadanga and Sadarpur have fallen prey to river erosion.
According to the local administration, 50 tons of rice and Tk9.5 lakh cash have been allotted for each of the upazilas to help the flood victims.
Besides, “flood shelters have been prepared across Faridpur to help those affected by the flood,” said Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Atul Sarkar.
In Rajbari, the water level of the Padma River rose by 7cm in the last 24 hours till Saturday morning and is currently flowing 68cm above the danger mark at Pangsha's Sengram gauge station point.
Meanwhile, 30,000 people in total 63 villages under 13 unions of the district remain marooned.
The flood-affected victims continue to suffer from an acute crisis of food and water as relief items provided by the local administration proved to be inadequate.
According to the district Department of Agricultural Extension, 1,045 hectares of cropland including transplanted Aman, transplanted Aus, vegetables, sugarcane, seedbeds and almonds have been submerged in the district.
Abdul Ahad, executive engineer of the Rajbari Water Development Board, said; “The water level in the Padma continues to rise and is causing erosion in several areas. We are dumping sandbags in risky areas to prevent erosion.”
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Syed Ariful Haque said: “213 tons of rice and Tk10 lakh have been allotted in five upazilas to help the flood victims”.
