The accused also threatened to harm her family members
Police have arrested an Awami League leader in Manikganj’s Shibaloy for trying to rape a college student working as a physiotherapist.
The detainee is Monoranjan Shil Nakul, 50, organizing secretary of Shibaloy Upazila unit Awami League.
Police arrested Nakul from his home on Friday afternoon after the girl filed a case for attempted-rape with Shibaloy police.
Upazila unit General Secretary Abdul Quddus said that they would take action against Nakul if the allegations were found to be true.
According to the case, the college student, who lives in the same area, used to give him therapy after Nakul survived a motorcycle accident recently and had his hand broken.
When she went to give him a hand massage on Thursday afternoon, Nakul touched her inappropriately and made an indecent proposal. He let her go only when a housewife arrived at his house at that moment.
The girl’s mother said: "After this incident, Nakul gave us Tk5,000 and asked us to suppress the matter. He also threatened to harm us if we told others or the police about the incident.”
He claimed that the police would not take any action even if they sought legal protection. “I have been a bad character for a long time,” he was quoted as saying.
“Previously he made a terrible offer to me. I want a fair trial for this incident,” she said.
Shibaloy Circle Additional Police Super Tania Sultana said that they had found the allegations of attempted-rape to be true in preliminary investigation.
