The father filed a case against the mother accusing her of selling off their daughter
The mother of an infant and another accused have been arrested after the 8-month-old baby was sold for Tk5 lakh in Sreepur.
The accused were identified as Shamima Akhter, 24, and Nuzzaman, 45, according to Sreepur police Sub Inspector (SI) Ankur Kumar.
Another accused in the case, Fazila Bibi, 45, is still absconding.
The infant’s father Zahidul Islam filed the case on Friday.
Nuzzaman bought the child for Tk5 lakh from the child's mother after signing an agreement, said the SI.
Zahidul Islam said he was married to Shamima Akhter in 2019. Shamima’s parents were against the marriage.
In December 2020, the couple were blessed with a daughter. When the child was six months old, Zahidul moved to Narsingdi in search of work.
On June 12, his wife left home with their daughter and switched off her mobile phone.
Zahidul immediately came home from Narsingdi and started looking for his family.
After searching in all possible places for two months, he filed a case with a Gazipur court. After registering the case under the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking Act, 2012 on Friday, the court directed Sreepur police to take cognizance of the case and necessary action.
According to the case details, as the couple’s relationship became strained in Zahidul’s absence, Shamima planned to sell the child on the advice of her family members and sold her for Tk5 lakh.
Nuruzzaman's wife, on condition of anonymity, said: "My husband extended his helping hand when he heard the baby crying while Shamima was working at a hotel. At one stage, she sold the child to us for Tk5 lakh.
“We have been married for 16 years but we do not have any children. My husband is innocent.”
Sreepur police station SI Ankur Kumar said Nuruzzaman was arrested and the child recovered from his house in Kazirchar village of Palash upazila in Narsingdi on Sunday.
After hearing the news, the baby's mother Shamima Akhter came to Sreepur from Bogra and was arrested from the Sreepur Bazar area on Monday.
Both the accused were sent to jail after appearing before the court in the afternoon.
