8 local newspapers cancelled in Rangpur

They have been cancelled for not publishing regularly

The declarations of eight newspapers, including four dailies and four weeklies, from Rangpur have been cancelled under the Printing Presses and Publications (Declaration and Registration) Act, 1973.

Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Asib Ahsan confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday.

The newspapers are The Dainik Gana Alo, Dainik Natun Sapna, Dainik Baher Sangbad, Dainik Rangpur Chitra, Weekly Uttarer Halchal, Weekly Tufan, Weekly Kawnia, and Weekly Samarthan.

According to the District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur Md Asib Ahsan, the newspapers were not published for three months or longer.

Mostafa Ahmed, an officer of the JM branch of the Rangpur Deputy Commissioner's Office, said: “Notices were served to the owners and publishers concerned to show cause.”

The response of the owners and publishers of two dailies and four weeklies was not satisfactory while there was no response from the remaining two dailies either, he added.

“In accordance with the provisions of sub-section (3-Ka) of section nine of the act, declarations of the newspapers have been cancelled and subsequent printing, distribution and publication have been banned,” said the deputy commissioner.
