Lawmaker Showkat Hasanur Rahman thinks he did not commit any crime by slapping him

Barguna 2 lawmaker Showkat Hasanur Rahman has assaulted a trader in Pathorghata upazila of the district over the latter’s not giving space to the MP’s motorcade and letting them pass.

The incident took place near Sheikh Russel Stadium in the area on Wednesday afternoon.

The victim, fish trader Nazrul Islam, is also the organizing secretary of Pathorghata BFDC Fish Wholesalers’ Association and former president of the Chhatra League’s Pathorghata municipality’s ward No 8 unit.

According to witnesses, a football match was arranged at the stadium and the microbus carrying the players had been asked to allow the MP’s entourage to overtake it. Lawmaker Showkat was the chief guest of the event.

But the microbus was unable to comply with the request due to the narrowness of the road, infuriating the MP.

Later, the lawmaker called Nazrul Islam, who was in the players’ microbus, to the stage and assaulted him in public. Showkat also asked Nazrul to apologize to him by touching his feet.

Pathorghata unit Awami League General Secretary Jabir Hossain, quoting the lawmaker, said Nazrul had specifically asked the microbus driver not to let the MP’s motorcade pass, which was why the MP slapped him.

Dismissing the claim, Nazrul said there was just not enough space to let the motorcade overtake the microbus.

Meanwhile, lawmaker Showkat said: “I slapped Nazrul because he is an immoral person. There are several cases against him.

“If I have committed a crime by slapping him, let him lodge a case against me.”

Pathorghata police station OC Abul Bashar said an official complaint had yet to be filed in this connection.

The police official could not say if Nazrul had been accused in any cases filed with his police station.
