The officer was leading a raid to arrest the suspect
A policeman has been stabbed to death by a suspected drug dealer during a raid in Haragach upazila of Rangpur.
The deceased was identified as Haragach police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Peyarul Islam, 35, of Kurigram.
Confirming the matter, Haragach police OC Showkat Hossain said: “Acting on a tip-off, a team of Haragach police, led by ASI Peyarul, carried out a drive in the Bahar Kachna area to arrest the drug trader named Palash on Friday night."
“When Palash was being arrested, with 151 yaba pills in his possession, he somehow got free and stabbed Peyarul on his abdomen and back, leaving him with critical injuries."
"Later, with the help of the locals, police arrested Palash while he was trying to flee the scene," the OC said.
The officer was rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for treatment. Later, he was shifted to ICU as his situation deteriorated.
Around 11:30am Saturday, Peyarul succumbed to death at the ICU while undergoing treatment, said the OC.
His body was sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy later in the afternoon, he said. "His remains will be handed over to his family after the autopsy."
A case was being filed against Palash, added OC Showkat.
