Speedy trial demanded of those involved in the attack
ARTICLE 19 has condemned the attack on Afroza Sarkar, a Rangpur based female journalist, along with four other journalists at the Rangpur Reporters’ Club premises on Friday.
“Afroza is the two time elected literary and cultural affairs secretary of the club. The attack was allegedly carried out by local goons at the end of the scheduled biennial general meeting of the reporters’ organization,” reads a press release issued on Sunday.
“ARTICLE 19 observes that the attack showcases itself as one of the grimy pictures of how insecure grassroots media workers, especially women journalists, are in the country,” it read.
They called for the immediate arrest and trial of the perpetrators following a proper investigation into the incident.
According to media reports, the general meeting of Rangpur Reporters’ Club was held on Friday afternoon.
After the meeting ended, some locals entered the club premises and started beating the members of the club. Five members of the club were injured of whom the condition of Azam Parvez, the newly elected joint general secretary of the club, and Afroza Sarkar are critical.
Both of them are currently undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
