A total of 30 dead dolphins have washed up in the river since September 2016
A five-feet-long dolphin was recovered from Maduna Ghat Barua Para area of Halda River in Chittagong on Thursday morning.
Mizanur Rahman, OC of Sadarghat Naval police station, went on a regular patrol in Halda and recovered the dead dolphin’s carcass.
The dolphin’s carcass was taken to Ramdas Munshihat Naval police outpost.
Later, it was handed over to Chittagong University (CU) Halda River Research Laboratory in the presence of Hathazari UNO, Forest Department and IDF representatives.
Prof Dr Manjurul Kibria, director of the laboratory and chairman of the Zoology department, said the dolphin was 4.9-ft long and weighed about 40kg. “No sign of injuries could be found as the dolphin’s carcass was decomposing.”
According to the list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), this species of dolphin is extremely endangered.
CU Halda River Research Laboratory has recorded the death of 30 dolphins in Halda since September 2016, Dr Manjurul added.
