The finance minister’s flak comes at a time when the additional chief engineer of RHD (Sylhet zone) is under investigation for corruption
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has criticized the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) in Sylhet for failing to complete the Badaghat bypass road adjacent to Osmani International Airport in over a decade.
The minister said: “This failure is truly tragic…It’s a disgrace that the authority failed to finish the work on 12km of road in 12 long years. The officials concerned should resign out of shame.”
His comments came as he spoke to journalists after handing over the keys of two ambulances provided by the Indian government at MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet on Tuesday.
Momen’s criticism comes at a time when the parliamentary standing committee on the RHD recently directed an inquiry into the irregularities and corruption of Tushar Kanti Saha, additional chief engineer of RHD Sylhet zone. Former finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith laid the foundation of the bypass road development on August 10, 2010, after becoming an MP from the same constituency.
The engineering department of RHD said the 12.7km long road would now be upgraded to four lanes at an estimated cost of Tk659.75 crore.
Mostafizur Rahman, executive engineer of Sylhet RHD, said the revised Development Project Proposal (DPP) has been sent to the Planning Commission for approval.
