Gazipur man gets life term for killing mother

A court in Gazipur has handed a man life sentence for stabbing his own mother to death five years ago. 

The convict, Shahjahan Khan alias Shaju, 46, has also been slapped with a fine of Tk10,000, and an additional jail term of three months in his failure to pay it. 

Gazipur District and Sessions Judge Mamtaz Begum passed the verdict on Thursday with the convict present at the dock, confirmed Public Prosecutor Advocate Haris Uddin Ahmed.

According to the case documents, Shahjahan’s father tried to stop him from taking down the bamboo trees beside their house on March 19, 2016.

He lost his temper and stabbed his mother Anowara Begum on the neck and ran away.

She died on spot and later Shahjahan’s uncle filed a case with the police over the matter.

Shahjahan surrendered before a court on May 2 the same year and confessed under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

On August 30, 2016, police charged Shahjahan with the murder and the trial began on September 1. The court recorded depositions of 13 witnesses before delivering its verdict.
