Sheikh Hasina hopes Oikya Front lawmakers will come to parliament

Describing Jatiya Oikya Front’s decision to boycott parliament as “politically wrong,” Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday reiterated her call to the political platform’s MPs to join the House sessions.

“I hope those who were elected lawmakers will come to parliament and speak here... I expect it from them,” she told the House, while responding to a supplementary question from Jatiya Party MP Fakhrul Imam.

“Oikya Front MPs-elect would get a scope to speak in parliament [if they join],” she said.

The Leader of the House added that the new MPs’ remarks would reach the people too as the parliamentary proceedings are directly broadcast through media, including Sangsad Television.

“I think they have taken a wrong decision politically [by not taking oath],” she said.

Regarding her dialogues with political parties before the December 30 polls, Sheikh Hasina said: “We wanted that all will work together to build Bangladesh. So before the election, I invited all political parties to a dialogue to ensure that they take part in the elections.”

About Awami League’s landslide victory in the polls, she said the people voted her party to power again as they got the fruits of development that took place in the last 10 years under her administration.

She also expressed her determination to build Bangladesh as the most developed, prosperous and peaceful country in South Asia.

“As long as I am alive, I will continue work for the continued development and progress of the country, Insha Allah,” she said.

The prime minister said Bangladesh as an independent and self-dignified country will continue to maintain good relations with other countries of the world in future.

She said the government’s unprecedented success in different indexes of socioeconomic development over the past 10 years has established Bangladesh as a role model of development in the world.

“This has been possible due to our people-friendly policy and implementation of the programs as well as hard labour and cooperation of the people... For that, I extend my sincere thanks to the people,” she added.

Sheikh Hasina also informed the House that 97 countries and international organizations have so far congratulated her on becoming the prime minister for third consecutive term, fourth in total, after Awami League won the 11th general polls.
